Inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus growth on tellurite-containing media by Lactobacillus reuteri Is dependent on CyuC and thiol production.

چکیده
Lactobacillus reuteri inhibits Staphylococcus aureus growth on Baird-Parker agar. This activity required the presence of tellurite and was not shared with other lactic acid bacteria or an L. reuteri mutant defective in cystine metabolism. Secreted products generated from L. reuteri cystine metabolism and thiols were shown to augment tellurite toxicity.

Cystathionine gamma-lyase is a component of cystine-mediated oxidative defense in Lactobacillus reuteri BR11.
Lactobacillus reuteri BR11 possesses a novel mechanism of oxidative defense involving an abundant cystine ABC transporter encoded by the cyuABC gene cluster. Large amounts of thiols, including H(2)S, are secreted upon cystine uptake by the CyuC transporter. A cystathionine gamma-lyase (cgl) gene is cotranscribed with the cyu genes in several L. reuteri strains and was hypothesized to participat...

Recent studies have suggested that the topical application of probiotic bacteria can improve skin health or combat disease. We have utilized a primary human keratinocyte culture model to investigate whether probiotic bacteria can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus infection. Evaluation of the candidate probiotics Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730, Lactobacillus rhamnosus AC413, and Lactobacillus sali...
متن کاملEffects of Cream Containing Rhamnolipid Microbial Surfactants from Pseudomonas aeruginosa MR01 on Growth Inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus
Background and purpose: Dramatic increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria highlights the need for new compounds with more effective antibacterial properties and biotechnology could be useful in producing these metabolites. The present study aimed at investigating the effects of rhamnolipid microbial surfactants in a cream-based formulation on growth inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus using in...
متن کاملRole of a cysteine synthase in Staphylococcus aureus.
The gram-positive human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is often isolated with media containing potassium tellurite, to which it has a higher level of resistance than Escherichia coli. The S. aureus cysM gene was isolated in a screen for genes that would increase the level of tellurite resistance of E. coli DH5alpha. The protein encoded by S. aureus cysM is sequentially and functionally homologo...
متن کاملThe inhibitory effects of Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei isolated from yoghurt on the growth and enterotoxin A gene expression of S. aureus
BACKGROUND: Staphylococcal foodborne intoxication is the most common cause of foodborne illnesses by Staphylococcus aureus strains and most are caused by the enterotoxins of S. aureus. Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is the most frequently responsible for staphylococcal food poisoning outbreaks. From a food safety and human health point of view, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) may provide a promi...
